Levitra (vardenafil) is a PDE5 inhibitor used to treat male impotence. The drug works by inhibiting the activity of a specific enzyme that prevents the patient from keeping an erection for long enough to have sex. You need to take Levitra from 40 to 60 minutes before having sex and can count on up to 6 hours of efficiency, although Levitra is most efficient you have sex about one hour after you have taken the tablet. Levitra comes in four different doses – containing 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg of the active ingredient. You may be started on the 5 mg dose and it can be increased later based on how your body responds to the treatment. The lowest dose is intended for people that have some contraindications, belong to a high risk group for developing certain side effects or those with a number of medical conditions that need to be taken into consideration. The following medical conditions need to be reported to your doctor before you start taking Levitra, just to make sure your treatment is going to be beneficial and safe for you: a history of a heart attack, high or low blood pressure, blood clots, personal or family history of Long QT syndrome, physical deformity of the penis, a bleeding disorder, a history of a stroke, angina, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, a stomach ulcer, a blood cell disorder, liver disease, and any other conditions you think may be of importance. It's always a good idea to talk to your doctor if you are going to start some new treatment and will be taking another medicine. In that case it's recommended to check and see if the drug you are going to take is likely to interact with Levitra. Tell the doctor prescribing you any other treatment that you are taking Levitra. When you buy some drug over the counter, also make sure it is not likely to interfere with the effects of Levitra in any way. The following medications are supposed to be reported if you are already taking them, or intend to take during your treatment: prostate disorder meds, antidepressants, heart rhythm medicine, antibiotics, conivaptan, blood pressure medication, antifungals, HIV/AIDS medicine, imatinib, diclofenac, drugs to treat high blood pressure, and isoniazid. Levitra is very well tolerated and side effects are very rare and mostly mild. The following mild side effects are sometimes reported – they are likely to occur if this is your first time taking Levitra and your body needs to adjust to the dose prescribed: warmth or redness in your face, memory problems, headache, stuffy nose, back pain, and an upset stomach. You do not need to report these side effects as they will most likely go away on their own without any need for special treatment. More serious side effects, such as shortness of breath, convulsions, vision changes, priapism, irregular heartbeat, sudden vision loss, ringing in your ears, feeling light-headed, and chest pain should be reported as soon as you get them to make sure they do not get worse. Serious side effects are unlikely and may occur if you failed to mention something important when talking to your doctor about the treatment.
